| Lil E. Tee: The Little Horse That Could |
There was something about him, maybe it was the look in his eyes, or maybe it was just because he was cheap, that encouraged Lynn Whiting to buy Lil E. Tee on that fateful day. "That horse won't become anything" was what so many stock breeders said about him. But E. Tee showed them that they were wrong. Then it came. Lil E. Tee was to run in the Kentucky Derby. He danced in the post parade, for he knew what was coming. They loaded him in the gate, he was ready to go, then -ping- the doors opened. Lil E. Tee ran for his life, he started at the back, dead last, but he fired himself up, passing horse after horse, as if they were standing still. Then he was after the lead, came right up beside Casual Lies, he might win, he might not, but now he had a chance. They were right side by side, both running on, free, their jockeys not holding, but pushing them on, both running for everything, theirselves, and their pride, then they were under the wire, who won? Nobody could tell. It was a photo finish, the horses were neck and neck. Lil E. Tee! He won! The longest shot in the race! He ran for his life, and he made it! He went to the winner's circle, took pictures, looked nice, then he went back to his stable, had his grain, and slept. The next day, they loaded him into a trailer, he went home, and he was retired. Never again would Lil E. Tee race, that longshot of a horse, with that look on his face, with his head in the air, he never again would run, but his legend lives on, in you and I, in everyone. Never give up on your dreams.
